Christmas Shopping? - The 3 Gift Flops you need to Avoid

Finding the perfect gifts for your friends and family this Christmas is likely to take a lot of time, energy and maybe even money.

Hectic shops, massive queues and a complete lack of inspiration can make it difficult to find the perfect gift for everyone. As a result we do what we do with most things in life we simply do the best we can in the time we have got and hope that it's good enough.

When it comes to receiving presents we all smile and thank the person giving them to us. We also put quite a lot of effort into reassuring that person that we love their gift even when the truth is that we don't
Christmas Shopping? - The 3 Gift Flops you need to Avoid

So in the spirit of the Christmas season let's be honest, nobody wants to waste their money giving a gift that's not appreciated and nobody wants to receive a gift that they don't really like.

To make sure you don't end up buying a gift that will leave your friends and family under-whelmed this Christmas take a look at the top 3 types of presents you should avoid giving

Novelty Gifts

At this time of year shops go out of their way to sell a huge variety of novelty gifts at low prices. These types of gifts tend to be most popular amongst people who are buying them as stocking fillers or who are trying to find a token gift.

Novelty gifts are popular because they are relatively inexpensive and they are often universally funny.

The problem with novelty gifts is that they tend to be funny for a short period of time after which they simply sit gathering dust in a corner. The truth is that after a while people want to throw them away because they are cluttering their home, but often they feel too guilty to do this. The result is that people end up with a home full of novelty clutter that they don't really want

Alcohol

Many people resort to giving a bottle of alcohol as a gift at this time of year. There is nothing wrong with this if someone has specifically asked for it. However, buying it for someone who has not asked for it is as much of a waste as giving a mince pie to Father Christmas on Christmas Eve. Let's face it when it comes to Father Christmas and Mince Pies: there is at least one at every house he visits, he ends up with more than he could ever hope to consume and he is unlikely to be impressed given the complete lack of imagination that has gone into it.

The truth about giving someone a bottle of alcohol at Christmas is that although they will probably consume it at some point, they are unlikely to remember who even gave it to them

Something for the House

Buying a loved one something for the house particularly if you share that house with them is a definite gift faux pas in most circumstances. A gift is supposed to be given so that the person receiving it can revel in the joy of a gift bought for their sole enjoyment. Remember this when making your selection
