The popularity of beach volleyball is extensive and it has become a world class sport. We'll discuss a little of its history and rules.

The game was most likely first played in Hawaii during 1915. That's where the Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club set up a volleyball court on Waikiki Beach. However most people believe that the true start of the game began in Santa Monica, CA during the 1920's following the development of the indoor game which began in Massachusetts.

This sport initially began as a type of family entertainment abut due to its low cost and broad appeal, it began to be played worldwide.

It gained a lot in popularity during the Great Depression. At that time many Americans had little cash so they thronged to the beaches as a very low cost way of spending their leisure time.

Different activities on the beach were initiated including beauty contests and other types of entertainment. Beach volleyball was one of the pastimes. As the popularity of this sport began to grow, sponsors noticed which ultimately culminated in the establishment of an International Volleyball Federation during the 1970's.

By 1986, the International Volleyball Federation officially recognized the sport. Since that time the sport has continued to grow and has moved into Asia and Europe.

In 1999, there were 12 open tournaments for men and six for women. The total prize money exceeded $3.6 million. During that same year, the sport attracted 460,000 fans and spectators.

Beach volleyball was started as a demonstration sport during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. A short while later, it was announced that the sport would be officially included in the next Olympics in Atlanta.

Regarding the rules, here is a summary:

- The game is played on the beach in a court which has been laid out to measure 16x8 meters. Each side is divided into 2 equal halves.

- There are two side lines and two end lines which defines the playing area.

- Just like tennis, if someone hits the boundary lines, the ball is still considered in bounds.

- The top of the net is set at 2.43 meters for men's events and 2.24 meters for women's events.

- Antennae is attached to the net and positioned directly above the sideline mark.

- The ball itself is made of leather and has a circumference of between 65 and 67 cm.

- A team may hit the ball three times to return it but no one player can hit the ball once.

There are a number of other rules but these are important ones to keep in mind. In any case if you are a fan of beach volleyball or you play it yourself, you will certainly understand why so many people really enjoy the experience.
