Magellan GPS, as a company was set up in 1986 and specialized in GPS devices. Taking the GPS market by storm, this company is seen as a tough competitor for other companies like Tom Tom GPS and Garmin GPS. It is commonly known that the earliest Magellan GPS designed especially for vehicle navigation is Magellan Maestro. Among the Magellan Maestro range of GPS devices are the Maestro 3100, 3140, 4000, 4040 and 4700. Each version of the Magellan Maestro comes with different features. For instance, the entry-level device Maestro 3100 is not equipped with voice control functionalities. On the other hand, Maestro 4700 responds to voice commands.
Some Maestro GPS devices will soon come equipped with Bluetooth functionality that would aid in hands-free calling via the GPS device. This Bluetooth functionality which will be called BlueSoleil would be able to transfer files to and from Magellan Maestros. These Magellan Maestro devices contain a QuickSpell feature that allows users to key in the city or street name they are looking for. As they start typing in the characters, suggestions will pop up, allowing users to easily choose the item they were searching for. The devices also come with "TrueView" displays that can feature 3D representations of intersections which drivers will encounter during their journey.
The routes that are entered on the devices are calculated based on the shortest time to reach destination, shortest distance to destination and least and most usage of freeways. The Magellan Maestro series of GPS devices will also be able to give routes based on multiple destinations. Users can enter several destinations and have the device calculate the destinations based on the nearest to the furthest from the start position. The Magellan Maestro series also come with a night mode which a feature which gives information on points of interest nearby. The Magellan Maestro series also have a SmartDetour function built into the devices. This is where the device will give detour prompts if drivers for are for instance driving on a freeway with slow moving traffic. The device will offer a route calculation based on the new detour route. The devices also come with an MP3/WMA player feature allowing drivers to play music while on the move. They also come with an additional functionality which allows users to store and playback photos on either JPG or BMP file formats. Definitely a useful gadget for drivers to have in their vehicles, there will not be one moment where drivers will find themselves lost on the roads.
