Protecting your computer from malware is extremely important, especially with the ever prevalent threat of identity theft. Enter StopZilla ( main site | download ), an adware and malware protection software program that has been around for years. StopZilla's main selling point is the protection of your computer on the fly in real time.
How does StopZilla stack up against the competition and how well does it defend your PC? We got ourselves a copy of StopZilla to test it out.
Download And Installation StopZilla Review
Downloading StopZilla is simple and fast. You're basically downloading an .exe which will automatically download the latest version of StopZilla from iS3's servers. This prevents old versions of StopZilla from hanging around the internet. Once you install StopZilla it will download the latest definitions list and after a quick reboot of your system it will proceed with a full system scan.
Scanning And Detecting Malware StopZilla Review
We ran StopZilla on our IBM laptop running Windows XP. The computer is around 5 years old, and Windows has not been reloaded fresh in over 3 years. In our test the full scan took about a half hour (times may vary due to size of your hard drive, how much is on it, as well as computer processor speed). StopZilla found the Vundo.a1 virus/worm on our system as well as a variety of cookies. Removal of the Vundo virus was quick and easy, and StopZilla wanted us to reboot the computer. We left the cookies on there as we do not find cookies to be much of a threat.
Scan schedules can be customized so you never forget to keep your computer clean. Scans can be scheduled on a daily or weekly basis, and you can have several different settings such as scan complexity and more.
On The Fly Protection StopZilla Review
StopZilla advertises unsurpassed real time protection of your computer against spyware, malware and other nasites, a popup blocker with "intelligence", as well as frequent if not daily updates to their definitions so you can stay one step ahead of the worst malware. StopZilla runs in the background, and sets an icon in the taskbar and takes up around 63.7 mb of memory as shown in the Task Manager. It doesn't seem to put any undue strain on the system and the computer runs as normal.
Interface StopZilla Review
StopZilla's interface is colorful and easy to read. The navigation scheme is very easy to understand, and you won't have to be a computer whiz to figure it out. The scan button is huge, you won't miss it.
Organization of the interface is separated into a home screen with some basic options and settings, a scans menu where you can select different scan settings, a real time protection menu, pop up protection settings, siteguard settings, and a scheduler.
All of these main components are customizable for power users. For example, Siteguard protects your computer from accessing known malware sites or sites that utilize "drive by infections" where simply going to the site could infect your computer with malware. However, if a site you know is safe is somehow blocked you can allow access.
Support StopZilla Reviews
The support that is offered for users of StopZilla definitely exceeds expectations. It's probably one of the most well-supported antimalware applications on the market. There is a toll-free phone number, email support, and live chat support. This is incredibly helpful, and you don't see this a lot with online software tools and applications. This is a definite plus for users of StopZilla and one reason we recommend it.
Actual Use StopZilla Review
When StopZilla runs a scan or updates itself a small popup will appear in the lower righthand corner. You can disable these popups if you want.
Overall we found StopZilla to be a good solution for your computer security. Although not perfect, StopZilla was able to identify a malware program we had no idea was residing on our test computer. You should be aware that StopZilla will only work in conjunction with Internet Explorer. It will not protect in real time if you are using FireFox, although the system scans will work.
You can download and install StopZilla for free and check out the program yourself to see how it works on your system, and you can also view your scan results.
