subject: Teaching English In Taiwan - How Much Money Can You Save? [print this page]

Teaching English in Taiwan can be a great way to save money. A lot of people come to teach English with the intention of trying to save money, but never do. Why does this happen? Just how much you save really depends on the life style you want to live. I've seen people not save anything and others manage to save up enough to pay off their university debts and much more. You can save money teaching in Taiwan if you really want to and you don't have to live like a hermit.

The average pay for an English teacher in Taiwan varies from about $18 - $20 USD per hour. This can be higher or lower depending on your qualifications and where you end up working. However, the majority of new teachers end up working for this rate. For many people this is already more than they may earn in their current job but for some it is the same. If you currently already earn this back home, how can you save money in Taiwan teaching? One of the biggest factors that allows you to save money in Taiwan is that the rent is much lower than most other developed countries. Apartments from two to 4 bedrooms range from $250 to $350 USD per month. Obviously if you share with someone else you could pay anywhere from $100 - $150 USD per month. If you want to live in a studio apartment with just a single room, you might end up paying just $180 USD per month. The low rent really helps you save.

Most teachers work about 20 hours a week. You can work more if you want, but on average you would probably find yourself doing 20 - 24 hours of teaching every week. It doesn't sound like much but if you don't mind eating local food you can save even more money. Western or foreign food usually costs about the same or even more than it does back home. Feel like going to pizza hut? Two large pizzas can cost you $18 - $20 USD. You can't save or you'll only be saving a little money if you eat foreign food every day. If you want to save on your food, eat local foods and avoid anything that is imported or is marketed as being "foreign". You can get relatively good lunches for around $2 - $3 USD which has plenty of rice, meat and vegetables. You can buy dinner for around the same price or if you feel like something a little fancier, good meals can be had for $5 USD.

Teaching English in Taiwan can be an easy to save money in Taiwan if you are happy to live a normal life and avoid spending up big and going out partying every night of the week. Just like any country, you can live relatively cheap or very expensive. The main advantage of living and working in Taiwan is that rent is so low you can save a major portion of your paycheck before you even factor in the cheap food and the other relatively low cost of living found in Taiwan.
