The period from the end of November right through until March can be pretty tough. Snow, high winds and torrential winds greet you every time you look out your window, or dare to venture from your home. Limited daylight compounds the situation, as those of us who work regular hours are unlikely to see sunlight,t apart from on the weekends. Getting away from this is a perfect winter treat, and cheap last minute holidays have allowed many people to go abroad on short trips easily and affordably. Most look to island destinations like the Canary Islands for these respites, but why not consider something a little more cultural? That way you can broaden your horizons and still escape the worst of the winter. My suggestion: check out Turkey.
Turkey is a marvellous country with a wide range of sights, sounds and foods that will delight you and your family's senses. Travel to Istanbul and you will see beautiful mosques, such as the Blue Mosque, and other amazing buildings. The Hagia Sofia is an absolute must-see, as this former church is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantium architecture. This city has so much to offer, so take a day to wander its markets, streets and restaurants.
The best part about a mid-winter trip to Istanbul is that you can do it on the fly. Simply log on and find a great, cheap deal and you can be heading to this exotic destination in just a few days. Just think: you could spend this weekend shovelling snow, or walking the dog in the pouring rain. On the other hand you could be sampling amazing local cuisine in thriving markets in the shadows of some of the world's most beautiful buildings. Which would you choose? That's what I thought off to Istanbul!
