Barbecue Sauce, The American Way

While Mexico has its salsa, and Italy has the claim to fame for the marinara sauce, barbecue sauce is clearly known as American. Whether it is an old tribute to the American West and all its folklore, or a rich southern tradition, no other country can truly stake claim to this delightful masterpiece. In all its glory and varieties, there are very few who do not indulge in using this concoction in some form in America.

The standard is most often the Kansas City style barbecue sauce with a rich tomato base and often very sweet. But this type of grilling is only one type of use as there are as many sauces as there are people it seems. Slow roasting with dry rubs, tangy or tropical style sauces, and even light sauces used for vegetables can be found in our great nation. Sauces for fish, chicken, pork or beef are all distinct in their own ways, and the options are endless.

The great American backyard barbecue is such a big part of most households that it has redefined the art of grilling. The memories of family gatherings can be conjured up simply with the smell of a hot dog slathered in barbecue sauce roasting on a grill. It is as if time can stand still at that moment, and the idea that nothing has changed in the preparation of that hot dog since your youth. That has a special significance, more than many people realize, as they continue to live in a world of fast paced, ever changing society. Being able to take part in an event that is exactly as your grandparents or even great-grandparents did is something special. This idea is not only classic, but also timeless, and should never be taken for granted.

It is amazing how a simple creation such as barbecue sauce could have so much connection to generations of families. When someone thinks about the Fourth of July for example, after fireworks what is the next thing they often say? Having a barbecue. When you mention Memorial Day or Labor Day what do millions of Americans do in unison? Have a barbecue. For those summer days every year so many people partake in the age old American tradition of grilling outdoors with family, and the thing that makes that event so tasty is the sauce. That sauce that every American knows, the barbecue sauce.
