Luxury Train Travel In South Africa: How To See Africa In Style

If you are fond of train travel and you would love to see Africa, there is one train journey that you should do in your life: the one on a luxury train from Cape Town, South Africa to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. After you've done this trip, you will never look at luxury train travel in quite the same way.

The train itself is widely described as the most luxurious train on earth. The interior is equipped with every modern convenience you can think of. Wood panelling is combined with Edwardian furniture to create an atmosphere of class and elegance.

All coaches have either a private shower or a private bath. Facilities like hair dryers and shaver plugs come standard. You can choose between a double bed, twin beds or sofa-seats that can be converted to twin or double beds at night. There will always be a writing surface and a private safe to lock away items of special value.

To sip a sundowner in the lounge of a luxury train while watching the sun set over the African landscape is an experience many people will give their right hands to enjoy. This is, however, something that is reserved for the privileged few: only 72 passengers in 36 coaches can be part of every journey.

The trip takes you from the beautiful city of Cape Town, through the mountains of the Boland area into the dry plains of the Karoo. From there it's north-west into Botswana. You will cross the Tropic of Capricorn just after Gaborone (the capital of Botswana).

The 1600 km journey then passes through the north of Botswana until it crosses the border into Zimbabwe at Plumtree. Heading north-west, the train passes Bulawayo and then its on to the Hwange Game Reserve, where you can actually see many of the wild animals of Africa from the comfort of your coach.

The trip culminates at the magnificent Victoria Falls, where you will see one of Africa's mightiest waterfalls thundering down into the ravines below. Apart from being awed by the falls, you will also have the opportunity for white water rafting, a cruise on the river, game viewing and of course photo taking opportunities galore.

Luxury train travel in Africa is something that you can't really compare with train journeys anywhere else on earth. The combination of top class cuisine, comfortable accommodation and unspoilt nature is a truly unique one that can only be experienced in the heart of Africa.
