Whether you love her or hate her or just don't rate her, there is no denying that Oprah Winfrey's recent Australian visit caused excitement and palpable anticipation wherever she went. I feel that she captured a special spirit and hope with her visit that made many Australians feel proud when they saw her admiration of the country and people reflected in their eyes.Marketers and brand makers have long talked about the "Oprah Effect" in commercial terms, but I think there is an "Oprah Effect" in human and spiritual terms that many Australians recognized and related to and that everyone can benefit from. So here's what I admire most about Oprah and what we can all learn from her reception in Australia:1. Be Transparently Yourself. Why do you think Oprah has so many admirers and detractors? The simple fact is that not everyone is going to like you, whether you are always being yourself or trying to be someone you are not. If you are not transparently yourself, you will always be wondering who you really are and you will waste precious time that can be spent with the people that matter to you, doing the things that really matter to you. Oprah has such unparalleled credibility in Australia and around the world because she has always been her real self on screen and off. Do not waste anymore time being something or someone you are not!2. Do Not Be Afraid To Question. Oprah has a special way of presenting information that invites consideration, questioning and debate. As a society, I feel that we have been educated out of questioning for far too long, and that if something cannot be quantified, qualified or justified within the first 30 seconds, it gets dismissed out of hand. Again, whether you agree with her viewpoint or not, Oprah brings a myriad of societal topics from paedophilia to spirituality to health & education to our attention for thought. I believe that we do not have all the answers, but discussion breeds curious and inventive solutions for individuals and societies. If something does not feel right to you, do not be afraid to question it. Your intuition will surprise you.3. Change What You Do Not Like. When Oprah wanted to introduce more spirituality into her talk show, the television network she was then with did not support her intuition; so she changed networks. Rather than accept someone else's perspective as her own, she made the move to change her environment and she has not looked back. You are the only person who can change something that is not working for you. It may not be on the scale of a network, but if it affects you in the way you live your life, then it is worth changing for your benefit. As a result of Oprah's move she catapulted to number one and has retained that position ever since, reaching and helping more people around the world than anyone else. How would your world change for you and those around you if you changed the things that were holding you back?2011 is only days away and I do not believe it was any coincidence that Oprah was in Australia making news around the world to help everyone stop and think about what we want from a new year. You can use this time to work out how to be yourself; question the things not working for you; and change your life now. Write your thoughts on a piece of paper or just take some quiet time to think about it - either way, you will be surprised at the clarity you can reach and the lessons you can learn from the real "Oprah Effect" in Australia.
