subject: Tips In Positioning Fire Safety Signs [print this page] The Fire Safety Order of 2005 in summary states that every business, charity or voluntary organization, contractor, and pretty much any place that welcomes a flow of guests are now required to equip themselves with fire safety measures. This means fire extinguishers, fire blankets, first aid kits and the like. But there is more to just having the equipment themselves - a good business owner must make sure that access to and usage of such equipment will be easy to follow and understand in case of such an emergency. After all, with the tendency of people to panic in such situations one can never be too careful. This is what fire safety signs are for. While buying and posting these signs all over the building is easy and convenient enough, here are a few tips for maximizing them:
1. They have to stand out and be easily seen
This means posting the signs in the normal field of vision. For example, if you need to post a sign that points the direction down to the fire exit which is in this case located say, at the bottom of a staircase, then it makes sense to post that sign a bit low where any person looking down to climb down the stairs would easily see it. It should be posted around five and a half feet high at the end of corridors where people running or hurrying to safety would easily spot them.
2. The signs have to be easily understood
The size of the fire safety signs and more importantly, the text and the directions it displays have to relative to the distance of which people are viewing it. If the sign would be at the end of the corridor, then it should read "Fire Exit this Way" from as far as the corner that would lead facing the end of that corridor. This way even a hurrying person would be able to read it from a distance.
3. Consult your local fire authority
This third tip is probably the most important. If a business wants to confirm whether one is in compliance with the fire safety laws, consulting your local fire authority is always a must. This is usually where more technical and specific instructions are given - including where to buy signs, what type of sign must be used where and pretty much the whole fire safety package. Remember that correct positioning of fire safety signs in the correct locations is a legal requirement according to the law. This means that every company must qualify for the issuance of the fire safety certificate.
Down the line of course, what matters most are the lives of the people. In cases of emergency, one must always be prepared with the right equipment & knowledge to have that valuable peace of mind. In this article we hope that we have given you some tips to make it easier for people to follow the correct safety rules in case of fire emergencies.
