Agra Fort is one of the most enchanting attractions of Agra. It was built in the year 1565 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Carved in red sandstone, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering an area of 2.5 km northwest of the famous Taj Mahal, it once served as the abode of Mughal Emperors like Shah Jahan, Humayun, Aurangzeb and Akbar. It boasts of impressive architecture and decorations. It is a fascinating example of the perfect blend of Indo Islamic architectural styles.

This fortified fort has an outer wall which is 21.4 m high. The fort was once accessed through the following gates namely Amar Singh gate, Delhi gate and Lahore gate. But now the entrance is only through the Amar Singh gate.

The fort complex consists of several wonderful apartments, each having its own unique charm. Explore its bastions, gateways, harems, royal rooms, palaces, ramparts and towers which speak volumes about its glorious history.

Some of the must-see structures of this fort are:

Jahangir Mahal

This beautiful palace was especially built for the royal women by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. It has wonderful ornamental stone brackets supporting the beams. Persian verses have been carved on the outer wall of this structure.

Diwan-e-Khas

This hall of private audience served as a venue for private meetings of the emperors. Its faade, marble pillars studded with semi-precious stones, floral designs and interior decoration are notable.

Diwan-e-Aam

This hall of public audience served as a venue for holding the public meetings where the emperor would listen to the petitions of the people of his kingdom.

Sheesh Mahal

It is a magnificent apartment built as a harem for royal ladies. The mirror work of this apartment is stunning.

Khass Mahal

It was Shah Jahan's sleeping room. The paintings on the white marble surface are a main attraction of this apartment.
