subject: The History Of Smart Cards [print this page] The first automated chip card was developed by Helmut Grottrup and his partner Hurgen Dethloff in Germany. The year was 1968, but his patent was not approved until 1982. By 1983, these cards were first used in France for their pay phone system.
The concept of a memory card was patented by Roland Moreno in 1974. Microprocessor smart cards were invented in 1977 by Michel Ugon and shortly afterwards, the ability to auto program the chip was defined. By 2006, mergers and acquisitions produced the worlds top smart card manufacturer, Gemalto.
In the 1990s, smart cards made major advancements in Europe. All debit cards in France contained microchips by 1992. By typing in a pin number, the French were able to provide a transaction by swiping their card into a merchant terminal. The most notable advancement in card usage in Europe was the use of smart chips in mobile phones.
In the 1990's, major credit card companies, such as VISA, agreed to work together to develop smart card specifications in credit and debit payment cards. Their work has found much greater success in countries other than the United States. National payment associations assist with the credit card companies in integrating detailed plans and implementation procedures for financial transactions with card payments.
Areas where smart cards are developing are mass transit, driver's licenses, patient card needs and passports.
