I was planning to teach Johnathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels to my 12th grade English students this year. Our English Lit. book features a couple of brief excerpts from the novel. When I was in college, I did not read Gulliver's Travels, so I figured I could watch the film in order to establish some context for myself and my students. To make a long, boring story short, Shakespeare's Macbeth took longer to teach than I had anticipated, so I cut Gulliver's Travels from my curriculum. But I figured since the film was sitting at my house, I should probably watch it.
I've seen some good Hallmark movies (Merlin, The Odyssey, Dinotopia, etc.) and I've seen some not-so-good ones (Alice in Wonderland), and I would have to lump Gulliver's Travels in with the not-so-good ones. This version of Gulliver's is the first to include all of Gulliver's voyages. I'm sure that's nice for all the die-hards, but for a guy like me, unfamiliar with the story and the historical context necessary to understand the satirical nature of the work, I found the film to be gruelingly long and boring. I'm debating whether I should blame the filmmakers or my own ignorance concerning Swift's work. I guess I will make my decision once I have had the chance to read Swift's novel, for if I continue to teach English Lit. I know that I will cover Gulliver's Travels--I just hope Swift's original is more exciting.
A Englishman returns after a long time abroad and tells his strange stories about the lands he visited which are allegories about the real world. Ever walk out at the end of a bad movie and feel as if your pocket has been picked? If you've never had that experience, you're not seeing enough bad movies. A good way to rectify that lack is by catching "Gulliver's Travels," a movie of such stupendous uninspiration that, watching it, I didn't know whether to be affronted or hornswoggled. Movies this monumentally dreadful, after all, don't come along every day.
