subject: Want To Wreck Your Home Business? Check Out These Helpful Tips To Avoid That From Happening! [print this page] Trust me, after almost twenty years in the traditional fast pace business environment; it fills great to be able to roll out of bed and make the long walk to my computer to go to work. While my friends and family were stuck in traffic or fighting the cold this morning I was warm and cozy in my office chair. They were rushing out the door trying to be on time, as I was sitting down to start my day as a home based business owner. I currently run 2 small businesses out of one room in my home.
Ok enough of the pleasantries, because as wonderful as working at home is, you must possess some great skills to find success at it. I am talking about time management and organization. If you are not careful, the comfort and distractions of having a home business can also be the doom of the very same thing. You have to find ways to ignore the laundry, cleaning and cooking that seems to be calling you throughout the day and make sure you stay on the task at hand. To help you accomplish just that, I have come up with a few tips that might make your life easier.
1: Be realistic with yourself. - You might want to start with asking yourself a few tough questions. Can I do this? Do I have what it takes to stay focused and ignore all the household distractions? Can I work to meet the deadlines while still retaining my freedom that I worked so hard to achieve? Freedom is great but it doesn't pay the bills and if you don't have the focus you need, this could be a disaster waiting to happen. Before you give a home based business a try, ask yourself the tough questions and try your best to answer them realistically.
2: Treat it like a job. Set goals everyday for yourself and work to achieve those goals just like you would if you had a traditional job. Set a routine and live by it! Schedule yourself everyday: Monday 8-5, Tuesday 9-6 and so forth. Schedule time for 15 minute breaks and a lunch just like you would at a traditional job. Remember this is how you have chosen to pay the bills and that means it is definitely considered a real job.
3: Appoint an accountability partner. As I write this I am waiting on my daily phone call from my manager, (I mean my husband) who will be calling to tell me he loves me, but more importantly checking in to get a status report. This accountability is very important to me and my husband has obliged me by checking in with me a couple of times a day. It gives me a compass to go by and goals to reach as my day progresses. See, I may be the CEO of this little room I am working from, but even CEO's have to answer to someone. I do not want to disappoint either of us, so I work extra hard to achieve the goals that I have set aside for my day. It is easy to let ourselves down, but it's not easy to let down that one person who has always believed in you.
4: Separate church and state. To manage your time working at home efficiently, you have to decide what you spend your hours on. Sometimes it is hard to explain to your family the difference between work time and family time. Once the workday is over, focus entirely on your family, and don't let business intrude on your time with them.
5: Get organized - It is very important; to not only organize your time, but also your workspace. It is so easy to waste time looking for that special project from yesterday that just happens to be in one of the piles stacked up all over your office. Create files on your computer and in your file cabinet and make sure you use them.
I hope these tips will help you with managing your time when it comes to your home based business. Having the right frame of mind and organization can be the real difference in your success.
