subject: Flexible Packaging Can Save You Money [print this page]

Several weeks ago we had an item that we had over five hundred of that we wanted to sell on ebay. We have shipped several things over the years and have a good idea on things and how much they will cost to ship, but these were a very odd shape and we had no idea on how much it would cost to ship them. We felt that with so many we could not afford to get the shipping price wrong so I went to the post office and asked them to give me an estimated price on how much it would cost to ship. I even got a box and put it in the box figuring that would give me a very close estimate.

I felt very confident that I had a pretty close price so we listed the items. We sold several of them and we got them packaged. I took them to the post office and had them all ready to ship. When they got the first one on the scale it was going to cost almost double the price they had given me. I was totally shocked. I had made a commitment to ship all of these that day so I paid the higher pricing and shipped them.

I called my husband and asked him what he had done to make them so much more expensive. He wanted to make sure they were packaged well and he had a hard time coming up with something that was flexible enough to package the item tightly. He ended up using bubble wrap and having to go with something a little bigger than what we thought, but he didn't think it would make much difference. We knew that we had to come up with a more flexible packaging or it was going to cost us way too much to ship these items that we wanted to sell.

Since we had so many we decided it was worth looking into our options for different packaging for these things. We didn't have much hope, but we were pleasantly surprised to learn about all of the different packaging that provided flexibility. We also realized that there are many more options out there than what we thought for shipping and it could end up saving us a lot of money. The most important thing that we learned was there are several small things we can do to save money on shipping and every little bit makes a difference.
