subject: Belly Rings - A Sexy Fashion Statement [print this page]

In recent years, body piercing has gone all the way from an object of controversy to mainstream fashion statement. Well perhaps it's not totally mainstream yet, but it has certainly become much more accepted by the general population in recent years. Celebrities and common folk alike can often be seen publicly displaying pierced body parts. Pierced tongues, lips, noses, eyebrows, ears, are just about everywhere, and the trend seems to be growing. However, of all the piercing seen in public these days, the belly button ring is perhaps the one which exudes both fashion and sensuality. But it has not always been that way.

During ancient times, body piercings were not so much for fashion statement as they were for ritual or ceremonial use. In fact, many cultures prohibited certain types of body piercing that were only for the sake of adornment.

In ancient Central and South American civilizations, warriors pierced their noses to appear more frightening and intimidating to their enemies. On the other hand, where nose piercing represented aggressiveness, lip piercings were meant to enhance attractiveness, especially among women of that era.

Body piercings were fairly common in ancient Egypt. However, the ancient Egyptian pharaohs reserved specific types of piercings for certain people. For example, only members of the royal family could ever wear a belly ring under any circumstances. Should a commoner be found with a pierced navel, the prescribed penalty was death. No tolerance for fashion statement there!

To be sure, there is still some societal stigma associated with body piercings, but this appears to be diminishing steadily with each passing year. Piercing may not always be a safe practice in every case, but more and more tattoo and piercing parlors are adopting safe measures to ensure that infection and side effects are minimized.

Belly rings appear to be most popular among youth and younger adults. Just as ankle bracelets were all the fashion rage a few years ago, today many people see belly button rings as sexy fashion statements that are attractive and indispensable wardrobe accessories. Turn on the T.V. and you can see dancers, singers, and actors wearing beautiful, sensuous navel jewelry. Walk down the street in any city and you're sure to see someone sporting a belly ring.

Today, there are no longer any pharaohs who would remove a person's head as penalty for daring to wear this alluring piece of body jewelry. The belly button ring has come a long way - from royal status symbol to a sexy fashion accessory. And as popularity of this jewelry grows, it is most certainly here to stay.
