Multi races and religious in Penang had lined up festivals through a year. Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Christmas and Deepavali was the major festival celebrated. Some festivals was participated from across the world such as Bon Odori Festival, Penang International Floral Festival and Penang International Dragon Boat Race. Tourists are invited to participate for enjoyment and gain knowledge for about the culture and Penang harmony race spirits. Below is some of festivals in Penang:
1.Hari Raya Aidilfitri Muslim will fasting during Muslim fasting month of Ramadan before Hari Raya. Hari Raya Aidilfitri long last for 1 month period. In this period, Muslim will visit the graves and seeking forgiveness from each other of family members. Mostly of Malay guilds will do an open house to invite friends to taste Malay delicacies like; lemang, traditional Malay biscuits, rendang and ketupat.
2.Chinese New Year
The major resident in Penang was Chinese. During Chinese New Year which last long for 15 days, you can view Chinese houses is decorated with red items such red lantern in front of each doors. The most importance days at Chinese New year is Chinese New year's eve "ninyabaa", first day "ninchuyi", ninth day "Th'nee Kong She" and "Chap Goh Meh".
At preceding of Chinese New year;"ninyabaa", there is a dinner where family members to have. While at the first day, the lion dance will see around Penang Chinese houses symbolic to evict evil spirits from house. It is the day where oldest who are married will give away a red envelope "ang pow" which containing money to juniors of family members. During the festivals, there is a visit to relatives and friends house.
On The ninth day "Th'ee kong Seh" ,birthday of Jade Emperor. This day is a big day for Hokkien community to honor and thanksgiving to Jade Emperor who rules the heaven. The hokkien penangites will praying at midnight 12am with fruits.
3.Nine Emperor Gods Festival
The biggest nine emperor gods temples in Malaysia was build at year 1971 at Jalan Raja Uda mainland. The nine emperor gods; hokkien sound "Kow Ong Yah" falls on 9th month of the Chinese lunar year. This festival will be held for 9 days duration. During this period, the devotees must eat vegetarian to purify themselves and to fulfill their vow. All devotees is wearing white shirt and white pant while going to temples. The ritual will begin around 8pm daily during the festival.
Many vegetarian food stalls is hanged with yellow banner along roadside and is one of the attraction. What is festival special? The best part of festival is immerse in hot oil, walk through fire coat, and perform unbelievable exploits.
On the last day of festival, a procession from temple to nearby beach to send nine emperor gods back to heaven with the decorated boat. There is one exceptional case, where at Balik Pulau Penang; the nine emperor was send to hilltop with the boat and fire it for sending nine emperor gods back to heaven.
