subject: Packaging Freight For Shipping Across The Us/canada Border [print this page]

When you're shipping something from the US to Canada, there are a few extra things that you have to consider. New Mexico courier services will tell you that in addition to the extra paperwork that you're going to have to prepare for international shipping, you're also going to need to take extra care when it comes to the packing of your shipment. That is because there are some things which are unique to international shipping which you should consider before packing your shipment.

One thing to realize right away is that when you're shipping internationally, there is a good chance that your goods are going to be packed and unpacked more often than they would be on a regular shipment. Mostly, this is because there is a good chance that the goods are going to be transferred between different vehicles more often than they would be if they were simply going to be shipped across a few state lines. This means that you need to pack your goods, especially breakables, in such a way that they can easily survive a little more movement and loading and unloading.

Another thing to consider is that packages are going to be opened much more often when you're shipping across international borders. Although they will often simply scan them, there are many times those borders agents will have to actually open your package to verify that the contents of the package actually match your description of the cargo.

Understanding this, you need to pack your shipment knowing that there is a good chance that you are going to have it opened. This means doing things like making sure that your package is going to be easy to unpack and pack. You don't want a package packed so tightly that the contents fall out when the border agents open it, making it difficult for them to pack it again.

Another good thing to remember when packing for international shipping is to include a copy of the shipping label on the inside of the package as well as on the box itself. This is in case while opening the package the label somehow becomes damaged or ripped. That way, the agents can get the new label and find out exactly where the package is supposed to go and make sure that it continues on its way. Follow these guidelines and you should have no problems shipping from the US to Canada.
