Why Do People Take Sharm El Sheikh Holidays?

The Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh has for some time been a very popular place to take a holiday. Not only do people from the region choose to spend their spare time there, but people from across the world do as well. In this article we'll examine what has made this resort into one of the most popular in the region.

The site upon which Sharm el Sheikh sits overlooks the Straits of Tiran, situated at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba. The town was originally just a sleepy fishing village but was radically transformed by the Egyptian Navy, into one of their most important bases. This move meant that in many ways, the town was modernised. During the Sinai Conflict of 1956 the town was captured by Israeli troops, but was returned to Egypt the following year. The resort experienced various frictions involving UN peacekeeping forces as well as incursions by Israel, until the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty of 1979.

After a colourful start, it is now true to say that Sharm El Sheikh holidays are thought to be very relaxing affairs, with good quality beaches and what is considered by most to be very reliable weather. Now the region is considered very safe and Egypt values its status as a safe and enjoyable place to go on vacation.

Scuba Diving

As well as the usual beach life attractions you would expect to find, Sharm El Sheikh holidays are considered to be ideal locations if you like scuba diving. As Sharm is situated near the Red Sea, it enjoys warm water, and more importantly, perhaps, clear water that makes scuba diving a real possibility. As it is an Egyptian port city, it offers a good deal for travellers from the likes of North America and Europe. This value for money is something that attracts people from across the world to Sharm El sheikh, as does affordable hotel accommodation and food.

As well as scuba diving, holiday makers are attracted to the local scenery too, which provides a dramatic backdrop for walking and exploring the various historical attractions that dot the area.

There is also a great deal of sailing to be done too, with many affordable boat rental options. What is considered an expensive past time in Europe, for example, is actually fairly cheap out in Sharm El Sheikh.

It is for these reasons that Sharm El Sheikh have risen to prominence in recent years.
