Snowdonia has been louring visitors for years with its stunning peaks, lakes, waterfalls, castles, and steam railways. Located in north Wales, the region is known not only for its plethora of natural attractions, but also for its preservation of the Welsh culture. The Snowdonia National Park was set up in 1951, encompassing 827 square miles, and including the mountain of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. The park also boasts 37 miles of coastline with some beautiful sandy beaches. The park attracts over 6 million visitors annually, making it the third most visited park in England and Wales. Adding to the old-world charm of the park, the Snowden Mountain Railway runs the only rack and pinion railway in the UK, dating back to 1896. The train allows less avid walkers to ride to the summit of Snowden Mountain. The railway runs from mid-March to October, and costs 21 round trip. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and covers 4 miles. Snowdonia is also famous for its plethora of castles. The most notable, perhaps, include Caernarfon, which gained notoriety as the setting for the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales and continues today as a World Heritage listed site. Dolwyddelan castle rose to fame as Disney took over the castle and grounds in the eighties to film Dragonslayer. The castle remains popular for the stunning views of surrounding areas from its hilltop location. Snowdonia has been gaining a reputation for excellent food and hospitality, with an increasing focus on natural ingredients sourced from local farmers. Specialities include local lamb, beef, seafood, cheeses, and preserves, so theres always a wealth of options for refuelling after a long day of exploring the countryside.
