Maternity clothes can be expensive, and you will only wear them for a short time. Fortunately, you can save a lot of money and still be comfortable by continuing to wear some of your current clothes, shopping second hand, and buying a few versatile pieces.

As your belly starts to grow, you will find that many of the clothes you wore before your pregnancy start to feel too snug. Most women need to purchase some pregnancy clothes by around the 5th month, sometimes earlier or later depending on your body type and how your pregnancy is progressing. Some women find they require looser clothes not long after the first signs of being pregnant occur, due to bloating.

The main goal of maternity clothing is to be comfortable and accommodate your growing belly, but that doesn't mean you need to give up style. Show off that growing belly with pride!

If you are trying to stick to a budget for your maternity wardrobe, the good news is you can probably continue wearing a number of items from your current wardrobe. Look for tops and dresses that have a high, or empire, waistband and are loose around the belly.

As you progress through the pregnancy stages towards the third trimester, you will find that you really need a lot more room in your pants and shirts. Not only has your belly grown, but your breasts will become larger as well. By this time you will likely need to purchase some pregnancy clothes.

You can still stick to a budget by purchasing versatile pieces that will last for the remainder of your pregnancy. Look for stretchy pants such as black leggings that will be comfortable around your waist. When buying maternity clothes, consider shopping at a second hand or consignment shop to find a better deal. Many of the used maternity clothes on the market are in excellent condition - after all, they are only worn for a few months!
