subject: Shipping Temperature Sensitive Goods [print this page]

There are a number of temperature sensitive goods which companies ship with couriers regularly. A Providence courier service will need special equipment to ship these kinds of goods, as they have to be kept in trailers with refrigeration and temperature control capabilities to be prevented from spoiling.

There are a number of different types of goods which can be damaged if not transported in this way. One of the largest examples of this is the medical and pharmaceutical industry. Blood and tissue samples need to be transported regularly. Anything biological has an extremely short life which shortens even more if kept at too warm of a temperature. Many pharmaceutical products also spoil if they are exposed to any significant amount of prolonged heat.

When shipping these types of goods, it is not just enough to have a courier that has the right kinds of trailer. In addition, they need certain permits and licenses enabling them to operate as a medical courier. This is because the medical goods themselves are considered hazardous, while many pharmaceuticals are controlled substances and toxic in large amounts, requiring a great deal of control within the industry that ships these products.

There are other temperature sensitive shipments which do not fall in these categories which couriers with refrigerated trailers may move though. Probably the largest example becomes the food industry. Frozen foods, produce, dairy, and meat all need to be transported in either a refrigerated or a frozen state in order to still be fresh when the reach the market. There is a large subsection of the courier industry devoted to moving those types of goods.

When you're shipping anything that can be damaged by temperature, it is not only important that you ship the goods with a courier that has the equipment that is needed, but also that you package the goods properly for shipment. Insulation is the most important thing when packing these types of goods. If they are ever left outside, or even carried from the truck to the delivery point, they can become overheated and spoil in only a few moments, depending on the items in question. By packing everything that you ship in well insulated containers you help to ensure that the actual temperature of the goods themselves stays low, even if they are exposed to warmer air for a few moments. Extra care when packing ensures that temperature sensitive deliveries arrive in good condition much more often.
