subject: Four Tricks to How to Become a Successful Travel Journalist [print this page] Don't Let Qualifications Hold You Back Don't Let Qualifications Hold You Back
A lot of people are put off even trying to get into writing whether it's becoming a novelist, a reporter or a travel journalist because they don't have the necessary qualifications'. These days, though, with a variety of online travel writing courses and online graduate degrees in creative writing available, you can quickly turn that love of travel and that way with words into a really fulfilling livelihood.
Make Sure You've Got a Thick Skin
Everyone's got to start somewhere. And there are going to be rejections. Lots of them. And not only rejections, either: there are going to no replies, snide, vaguely insulting responses, implausible suggestions for how to improve your submitted piece and every other form of slight and knock-back imaginable. And amidst all this, the only way to get better is to keep taking it on the chin and keep writing, writing, writing. No matter what anyone else says.
Choose Your Publisher Carefully (Go Online, Basically!)
This point ties neatly into the one above: don't go all out and try to get into the National Geographic straight away. In these days of the internet, there are any number of great publications who'll help you build up a decent portfolio and pay you a small amount for it. Matador Travel, WorldHum, TransitionsAbroad and IndieTravelPodcast are all great places to start, being both vibrant, engaging sources of online travel writing and yet still fully aware of their responsibilities to take on your writers.
Don't Try to Be' Anyone Else
By all means read the work of other travel journalists. See what works for other travel journalists. But don't, under any circumstances, try to be like' other travel journalists. There's only one way to become a successful travel journalist and that's to be yourself and to recount your experiences as they occurred to you not as if you were pretending to be someone else.
