Solid Sound Festival personalized for you, if you like that sort of thing

Alternative country rock band Wilco have decided to put on a music festival, and in doing so have, hopefully, begun to chip away at the impersonal plethora of promoter and vendor fueled fests.

The Wilco gathering, named Solid Sound Festival, will occur the weekend of August 13-15 in North Adams, Massachusetts. Instead of hosting the weekend in a less than temperate, less than civilized climate for three days straight, the site for the sound fest will be the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

Fortunately for those attending, complete immersion in Wilco culture will be possible. The band's side projects will be playing, as well as some of the band member's favorite artists. Attendees will have full access to the museum's existing exhibits as well as exhibits that have been specially planned for the fest. An array of the band's screen-printed concert posters will be on display as well as a live demonstration of screen-printing. For those interested in music production, there will be interactive exhibits involving both stompboxes and drumheads. There will be theatre groups and comedians performing, and children have access to the museum's KidSpace area.

Obviously this festival is not for the typical fest-goer. It caters to those who like to attend concerts to hear more than the band's hit songs, to those who care about artistic longevity and craft-development, and to those who care about culture more than cultural status. This could be the beginning of something big, something for people who love original music. Other bands have hosted similar events in the past, namely Phish who since 1996 has hosted several Phish-only festivals. In a musical climate where the individual is proving to take precedence over the masses, we could be on track to see a deconstruction of traditional means of music exhibition.
