subject: Shipping Across The Canadian Border [print this page]

Courier services often require specific documents or forms that need to accompany shipments traveling across the border of the United States and Canada. However, if you are unaware of where and how to obtain these documents, a courier service may be able to direct you in locating the forms you need. When readying your document or package for pickup and shipment, the courier will usually double check and make sure that you have included all the required forms in their entirety. This is done to protect the shipper, the courier, and the receiver. Any error or omission in the required documentation may cause a delay in processing. Since 911, security administered across country borders, even between good neighbors such as the United States and Canada, has become much stricter. However, your courier should have the knowledge to help you ensure that this documentation is filled out appropriately with a minimal amount of hassle or concern.

A commercial invoice is one of the documents you will require when using courier service to ship a package across the border. Sometimes this can be avoided when sending small, personal gift items. Generally, however, you should always check with your courier if you have questions on the necessity of paperwork for any item to be shipped. Any items sold, through any type of transaction, including over the Internet and via eBay, will require a commercial invoice. Some couriers will insist that any item that crosses the border MUST have a commercial invoice. You will probably also require a B13A Export form if you are shipping goods to the United States. Your courier service may be able to provide this you to via a form that you print from their website online.

In any case, the documentation required to ship goods across the border may vary depending upon the value and nature of the parcel. Multiple goods with different values will require extra paperwork. Furthermore, any goods that fall under the NAFTA agreement will need forms filled out that are specific to their nature. Speak with a representative at the courier service before shipping any packages to ensure that you have all the required forms and that those forms are filled out correctly. This will prove to be a big step towards avoid problems and delays that could damage your credibility as a seller. If your business depends on your ability to ship goods quickly and efficiently, it makes good sense to be meticulous when processing documentation.
