subject: Ken Mehlman: Global External Affairs [print this page]

A Member of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, LLP, Ken Mehlman oversees the global external affairs activities of the firm. His duties include regulatory affairs and public policy, engagement with the key stakeholders of the portfolio companies and the firm, corporate marketing, and communications.

Mehlman was a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld prior to joining KKR. His job there was to help individuals and businesses assess their risk and take advantages of opportunities that were a central part of business and public policy.

During President Bushs 2004 re-election campaign Mehlman acted as the campaign manager. He was also the Republican National Committees 62nd chairman. The author of The Almanac of American Politics, Michael Barone, compared the success that Mehlman has enjoyed to that of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. Barone felt that the two were equal in both revolutionary approach and in finding new constituents and customers. Mehlman also acted as the White House political director during President George W. Bushs first term, and he also held several other high level positions in the White House and Congress.

Mehlman earned his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1991 and earned his Bachelor of Arts from Franklin and Marshall College in 1988.

Mehlman also acts as a trustee for Franklin & Marshall College, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the National Endowment for Democracy. He serves on Harvard University Institute of Politics Senior Advisory Committee and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He also serves with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Foundation in the executive leadership cabinet.
