subject: Skin Cancer - Basal Cell Carcinoma [print this page]

Skin cancer affects over one million Americans each and every year. Although the exact cause of skin cancer is not known, over exposure to the sun has been determined to be a leading factor. There are three basic types of skin cancer - basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Of the three types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma is one of the most frequently seen and diagnosed. It is also one of the easiest to treat if detected early on.

A basal cell carcinoma can pop up relatively anywhere on the body. However, the most common places to find a basal cell carcinoma are on places of the body that is exposed to the sun.

Although anyone can develop a basal cell carcinoma, there are those that are at a higher risk. Higher risk people include:

* Those that spend a lot of time in the sun

* Those that are fair or light skinned

* Men

* Those that have weakened immune systems

* Those that have family members that have had basal cell carcinoma

Signs and symptoms of basal cell carcinoma include the following:

* Scaly skin with white crusty edges that may have a sunken middle

* Bumps that are shiny, pink, brown or dark and that will not go away

* White patches on the skin that look like scars

* Pink spots on the skin that may have a depression in the middle

It is important to keep a close check on your skin. If you notice any areas that may seem suspicious you should see a dermatologist immediately for the proper diagnosis and treatment. Treatment of basal cell carcinoma and other skin cancers are highly effective if diagnosed in its early stages. So, get in and get checked out so you can get taken care of.
