subject: Save Money on your Heating Bill - Use a Heat Pump [print this page]

A heat pump works just like a refrigerator by transferring heat from one place to another. The heat that you can feel at the back of your fridge is coming from inside it. An evaporator coil inside the fridge draws warmth from the air inside and transfers it through a condenser coil in the back to the air outside. Heat pumps use two coils, one inside and one outside, which are linked to extract warmth from the outside air and to transfer it to the air inside the home. This happens even on a very cold winter night. An important feature is that it is heat that is being transferred and not air. It is also possible to run heat pumps in reverse, pumping heat out of the home, and operating as an air conditioner.Heat pumps have an advantage over all other forms of heating such as gas, oil, coal, log burners, open fires and electricity in that they do not need heating elements to produce heat. These all burn energy to create heat with varying degrees of efficiency. Heat pumps only need enough electricity to drive the heat transfer process redistributing the warm air.In winter it is cost effective to leave the heat pump on heating all the time. You can turn it down at night or while out of the house, conserving energy while keeping your home warm. Turn the temperature up again when you get up or arrive home and your home will soon be at a desirable temperature. To maximise the savings it is important to check the Energy Rating of the model that you install. The higher the star rating the more efficient the model. A saving as large as 75 percent when compared with other heating methods can be achieved.Another cost effective way to save on your energy bill is to make sure your home is well insulated with wall and ceiling insulation. In winter this can make a difference of up to seven degrees.
