Charl Schwartzel is the Africa Open champion after a narrow but impressive victory at the East London Golf Club in East London, South Africa. It was Schwartzels fourth European Tour victory and although it was his first win anywhere since the Madrid Masters in 2008, he has been regularly in contention since. The victory was hardly unexpected especially give his recent runner up finish at the Alfred Dunhill event. A European Tour member since 2003 and yet still only 25, Schwartzel put together a final round of 67 to move past third round leaders Trevor Fisher and Thomas Aiken, Aiken holding on to finish second while JBE Kruger, the 23 year old from Bloemfontein who plays the Asian Tour, finished third. From an Australian angle the performance of European Tour rookie Rick Kulacz, who finished in a share of 4th, was cause for celebration. The former world junior champion is an outstanding prospect for Australian golf and this good early result on the 2010 European schedule is a great boost of confidence for him. He put together consecutive weekend rounds of 67 to move from well back in the field to earn 38,000. Kulacz played in Asia in 2009 but earned his playing rights in Europe via their Tour School late last year. Other Australians to make the cut were Scott Hend and Matthew Zions who finished in a share of 35th. Next week the European Tour again joins forces with the Sunshine Tour for the Joburg Open in Johannesburg making for an exciting week of sport in the city. The final cricket test between England and South Africa is also played there this coming week.. find what you want at golf discount, golf online, golf equipmentAbout the Author:
