subject: Traveling To This Awesome Location May Not Be Something You Would Have Thought Of [print this page] Anyone can travel to the usual places of the Bahamas, Mexico and Canada. Break free from the rut and see Antarctica. And in recent history, a unexpectedly large number of people have started to discover the hidden charms of the cold and dark destination. We may study Antarctica as school children, but as we age, we somehow forget about the icy continent.
Tourists can fly from New York to Buenos Aires or the city of Ushuaia. This is in Teirra del Fuego, Argentina and is the most southern city on the planet. Two days can spent enjoying this amazing city before embarking on an Argentine Navy transport, complete with tugboat and ice breaker, to begin moving across Drake Passage for the vacation of their lives. The Drake Passage offers 600 miles of the roughest seas known to man. This area stretches from South America to Antarctica.
The earliest seamen who had survived the passage were allowed to put one foot on the table after dinner was done. For the especially courageous who traveled even farther south, and traversed the Antarctic Circle, permission was given for him to stand with both feet atop the table. Its a little-known fact that, even today, this tradition still continues.
Once you make it to Antarctica you don?t have to limit your experience to feeding a penguin or carving your initials into an iceberg. The Antarctic tour also makes stops at several U.S. that are designed to examine earth's movements, glacial and marine biology, meteorology, and associated issues. Anyone who has visited will tell you about the amazing hospitality and knowledge these scientists display.
While on the tour, you will take part in a comprehensive course of scientific research, encompassing everything from geology to marine life. Tourists can see that Antarctic water holds more living matter than water from anywhere else in the world. Travelers can choose to sleep onboard the ship, but they are also free to travel daily by foot or boat to many different areas. US winter it is summer time in Antarctica, and vice versa depending on what travel season travelers choose. Summer temperatures in Antarctica may reach a balmy thirty degrees above zero, but the wind chill is remarkably cool. Basic winter gear, like parkas, pants and mittens, are provided to tourists to protect them from the cold.
Included in the tour are a couple "get acquainted" gatherings with penguins as well as sea leopards and even elephant seals...who live up to their name by weighing in at around 2.5 tons each. A whale graveyard can be visited, too. You?ll probably not want to spend the high fees on overweight baggage on your return flights, so don?t take the whale bones as momentoes.
