Rocket Japanese is a popular Japanese learning system. Does it actually work?
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM LOOK LIKE?
Rocket Japanese is a software system for download or as a set of CDs. The system consists of audio recordings, videos, and special software. In addition to that, you get access to a "Learning Lounge" where you can test your skills, and communicate with other students and teachers.
The idea is to teach Japanese by a system known as Visual Association. Visual association is the way you learned to speak your native language. You HEARD a word and SAW its meaning at the same time. In this manner you easily and quickly picked up the meanings of words. Rocket Japanese attempts to replicate the process with the use of video, audio, and software.
HOW WELL DOES IT WORK?
Rocket Japanese is a powerful way to learn Japanese, IF you are sincere and willing to put in time on a regular basis. Ideally, you should aim to view the material for some time each day (30min to 1hr at least). The individual lessons are designed to build on one another. Therefore, being consistent is very important.
Learning a new language is much like learning to ride a bike. For the first week or so you might think that you aren't getting anywhere. If you keep going, however, you will come to a point where things suddenly come together. You will find that you are suddenly able to hear most of the words in the audio recordings and can make basic sentences easily.
Then you can move on to learning more advanced grammer and vocabulary.
IS THIS THE BEST SYSTEM FOR EVERY ONE?
Some people find it difficult to focus unless there is some outside pressure like an upcoming "exam" or an instructor checking their "homework".
Rocket Japanese is a learn at home system. It is very powerful but you must provide the follow-through yourself
If you feel you need the pressure of a classroom setting in order to take action, consider a class at a local college. Remember, however, that classroom instruction will cost much more and can take longer.
