subject: Volkswagen's Premium Sedan 'vento' To Launch By Autumn'2010 [print this page] Volkswagen, the German car major announced today that it will launch its new sedan Vento in India by the end of year 2010. The car would be shelved in the segment of Premium entry level sedans and is targeting to compete against the current ruler of the segment Honda City. Vento, meaning 'wind" in Italian would be available in both Petrol and Diesel variants in India.
The manufacturing of the sedan would take place at the Chakan facility of the company, near Pune. In a recent statement Mr. Neeraj Garg, Volkswagen's Director, passenger cars said that the launch of Vento would be a milestone for the brand in India. He also added that the car has been designed keeping the Indian customers and their preferences in mind.
It is expected that both the Petrol and Diesel variants would sport a 1.6 L engine and would be up-for-grabs in both manual and automatic transmissions. Volkswagen Vento would be the second car from the company's stable that would target the mass-segment in India after the launch of Volkswagen Polo, a premium hatchback shelved at Rs 4.34 and Rs 6.70 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi).
Volkswagen Polo has been extremely successful in India and received a tremendous response from Indian car buyers. Within a month the booking had already crossed 16000 which was a great sign and a pointer to the growing taste of Indians towards luxury. The brand has also been successful with its premium car Beetle has indeed responded much better than the company had even expected. With Vento hitting the Indian roads, Honda City certainely has a world-class competitor to fight against to retain its supremacy.
The car however would be the company's 7th launch in India as currently the line-up for the company includes compact cars Beetle and Polo, premium sedans Phaeton, Passat and Jetta and sports utility vehicle Touareg in the country.
