Metal guitar master Dimebag Darrell partnered with Dean guitars before his unfortunate death to design the ultimate metal guitar. This guitar, known as the Razorback, is as deadly sounding as it is deadly looking. The jagged design makes it clear that this is no old-fashioned guitar!
The Razorback guitars come in a wide variety of price-points depending on their construction and feature-set. The Razorback DB is a more budget-conscious model, but that doesn't mean it's second rate. This import model is a great guitar at a very affordable price. Let's view the Razorback DB in more detail.
The Razorback DB that we reviewed came in "Classic Black," but you can also get the axe in Metallic White if you wish. It has a rosewood fretboard with a fitting razor inlay at the 12th fret and a mahogany body. The instrument also includes Grover tuners, Dean-designed pickups, and a tune-o-matic style bridge.
First things first, how does it play? Like many instruments in this price range, the Razorback DB needed a few tweaks before it would be in top shape. We adjusted the neck and the bridge to our liking, and have to say that once we got it set up, the Razorback DB produced some major shredding. The action and playability were quite solid overall, especially for the price range.
We were very happy pleased with the sounds we heard from the Dean-designed humbuckers. The tones were what we hoped for with such a metal shred machine. The lows were thunderous and the highs were cutting, just what we hoped for. You won't be getting an incredibly versatile instrument, that's for sure.
That's not really a slam because one look at this guitar, and you know it's not mean to play "How High the Moon." It's a one-trick pony, but that's to be expected. It's quite a good pony, though!
Just about the only complaint we have is that the included case seems pretty flimsy for continued heavy usage, but for a guitar as inexpensive at the Razorback DB, you really shouldn't expect a pro-level case.
However, for the price, it's a pretty serious metal machine and highly recommended for metal and shred guitarists on a budget.About the Author:
