If you are someone who likes to look your best and help others look their best, perhaps you've thought of starting your own beauty salon. Whether your specialty is hairdressing, cosmetics, fashion, or image consulting, a beauty salon can be the perfect place to share your talent with the rest of the world. However, starting your own beauty salon will take a great deal of hard work as well as a solid knowledge of how to start a small business.

Fortunately, a beauty salon is not an endeavor that you will need an enormous amount of funding for. A small business loan may be just what you need to get your company on its feet. But before you go in for funding, you'll need a good idea of how much money you'll need up front. The first thing to consider is what services your salon will offer. Will you focus on nails, tanning, hair, or cosmetics? Or will you offer a combination of two or more services? Next, you'll need to find your location. Location is essential. A commercial real estate agent may be able to give you a good idea of what is available in your chosen area. Find a place that has enough room for everything you have planned.

After you've planned your services and found a suitable location, you'll need to figure out how many personnel you will need to help you keep the business running. This will be an important expense. Another important expense to calculate is the equipment you will need to purchase or rent in order to be able to function. For example, if you will be offering tanning services, you'll need to find a place that offers tanning beds for sale and figure out a general price for the beds you want. It would be a good idea to visit other tanning salons in the area to see what they have. Perhaps you can offer something no one else has. Besides equipment for your services, you are also going to need equipment like cash registers, computers, etc. You will also want to factor in expenses like rent, utilities, insurance, licensing fees, marketing, advertising and other start-up costs.

Once you've got your funding and you are ready to go, make sure you recognize that qualities that will keep your business thriving. Because of the nature of the business, the customer service of your employees will be a huge factor in retaining clients and customers. Also, the professionalism and training of your employees will be important. Once you've figured out these essentials, you'll be ready to start a lifetime of helping others look their best.
