subject: What Is Salting And Why Should You Always Do This When Mailing Post Cards [print this page] Place Yourself on the Mailing List Place Yourself on the Mailing List
One final suggestion would be that no matter what list you use, make sure that you put yourself on the list. This is called Salting the list. If you have an Excel spreadsheet, go to the bottom of the list and add your own name and address. That way you'll always be sending a card to yourself whenever you do a mailing. That way you can see exactly how it's going to be coming out to people and how they are viewing it after they receive it in the mail. That way you'll be able to see if by chance you cut off the headline or something like that. You can try that.
Create a Small Mailing List
The other thing you can do if you're not sure about this is do a really small list. You can do a 10 or 15 person list. It will cost you $5 or whatever. That way you can test it to make sure the cards come out the way you want before you do it on a larger scale where it may cost you $500, $800 or $1,000. You can do a relatively small test to make sure it comes out correctly before investing more to do a larger mailing.
Alright, that's all the information on marketing to potential sellers by mailing postcards. I think you're going to find postcards should be one of the main components of your marketing program for sellers.
It works, it's fairly cheap to do, and it's very effective. There's no question it works, because I use it all the time. Particularly if you use this system and you learn from it, you'll find out which cards work better and you can track these very precisely to make future mailing more successful.
Let's say you send out 1,000 postcards and you get 15 phone calls. You know you got a 1.5 percent response. Next time you do it you could perform a test and use a better headline or you can change your call to action. You can do all kinds of things to hopefully improve that response. Maybe the next time you do it you get a 3 percent response. If you keep testing then you can find out exactly what words are getting the best response and why. You can keep improving and driving down the cost of your leads.
