Safety Measures Taken By Southern Railway

The southern Railways are taking all safety measures to provide comfort and safe journey to the travellers.

1. At Moore Market Complex some platforms in 12, 13 and 14 have been provided with surveillance cameras which are going to record the photographs of drivers when they will start the train and it will also keep a check on illicit mobility of the people if there is any.

2. Surveillance cameras are fitted on 17 platforms of Chennai Central Railway Station.

3. The platform No. 14 is fenced by a boundary wall which is around for 200 metres to provide security. This is done to keep a check on unauthorised people who might create disturbance in the complex.

4. There is also an incorporated security scheme which provides the facility of (a) access security (b) perimeter security (c) surveillance cameras and (d) sniffer dogs. With the help of these services security is provided in all the chief stations.

5. 7 most important stations at Southern Railway (Trivandrum Central, Mangalore, Calicut, Tiruchi, Ernakulam, Coimbatore and Madurai) are sanctioned with a huge amount of Rs.51 crores for security reasons.

6. The suburban railway stations like Chennai Egmore, Chennai Beach, Moore Market Complex Tambaram, Basin Bridge, Mambalam and Trivellore are also sanctioned with railway budget of about 15 crores.

7. The cabs are frequently checked by the RPF Security staff in order to maintain the decorum.

8. The cab drivers are provided with the ID Cards so that there is no illegal manning of cabs.

10. According to the security rules the keys of the cab is given to the Motormen to make sure his accountability.

11. The EMU cabs are of the trains are locked when it is not in use, for security reasons.

12. To avoid unlawful starting of EMUs by unofficial drivers there is also a system of Guards key. Here the motormen cannot be began the train without Guards bell.

13. Railway staff has to be mentally alert to provide complete security to the people.

14. There is always communication between the Traction Power Controller and Section Controller to facilitate Traction Power Supply which is to be switched off at the time of emergency.

15. It is the responsibility of the control staff to check the arrangements before assuming charge. Railway Board have been approached for sanctioning a pilot project for Chennai Division for installing the Biometric System of authorising Electric Multiple Units movement after verification of finger prints of Motormen to be recorded in the system.
